Over the course of its six decade plus existence, the choir known as The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices has left an indelible mark on popular musicians and culture. Though the choir became famous after the English independent record label 4AD reissued a pair of anthology albums in 1986 and 1988 with the title "Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares", their recordings date back as far as 1957. 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell had been introduced to the choir via a third or fourth generation cassette lent to him by Peter Murphy, singer from the band Bauhaus, who himself had been entranced by the music.
Simultaneously ancient and post-modern, the sound of The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices reminds us that the human voice is the most powerful, versatile instrument ever created. Unadorned and transcending both cultural and language barriers, the ensemble's performances provide one of the most unique and compelling experiences in music: not only did the choir win a Grammy for Best Traditional Recording in 1988 with its second 4AD release, but it had already been included on the gold record that was put on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977 in search of extra-terrestrial life as one of the remarkable cultural heritages of mankind. The choir has subsequently worked with or been sampled by artists as diverse as Kate Bush, VAST and Drake.
'Pora Sotunda' is the first release of new material by the choir written in over 20 years and features another outstanding singer, Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, rendering this single a unique joint recording of some of the most extraordinary vocalists of the present day. The single is released in a limited edition 7" vinyl format only, and is sure to become a sought after collector's item. It precedes the release of a forthcoming The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices album scheduled for early 2018.

The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices will release their first album of new studio recordings in over two decades on May 25th, 2018. Better known to many as Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (Grammy winner for “Best Traditional Folk Recording”), ‘BooCheeMish’ sees the esteemed Bulgarian choir performing together with erstwhile 4AD Records label mate Lisa Gerrard (co-founder of the duo Dead Can Dance) on several tracks, thereby uniting two of the most distinctive vocal acts working in music. Gerrard, who is also well known for her movie soundtrack work on films such as ‘Gladiator’ and ’The Insider’, has often spoken about the influence the choir exerted on her singing technique when she discovered their music in the early 1980’s.

In successfully connecting Bulgarian folklore with other traditions and cultures, the album manages to retain the unique identity of the voices, vocal styles and techniques of the individual choir members, even when allying them with acoustic accompaniment such as stringed instruments and various types of percussion, including beatbox.
Once described as “the marriage of the avant-garde and the Middle Ages”, the magic of the ensemble stems from its success in mastering Bulgaria’s diverse, age-old vocal traditions while simultaneously sounding strikingly modern and original, thanks to the unique choral music structure - multi-part a cappella arrangements that transform its collective sound into strange colours as if something other than the human voice is being heard.

Otherworldly female vocals from extraordinary performers have always been the trademark of world-famous choir ensemble The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices (formerly known as "Les Mystères Des Voix Bulgares"). After an almost 20-year hiatus due to the death of producer Marcel Cellier, the choir released its critically acclaimed comeback "BooCheeMish" in 2018 together with esteemed guest vocalist Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), combining magnificent vocals from various stylistic backgrounds and traditional Bulgarian instruments with modern elements like beatboxing. The ensemble and its host of guests embarked on a successful tour in 2018 and 2019, performing in renowned concert venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Netherlands or L'Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium.

Summer 2020 sees a continuation of the choir's live activities in Europe, and the new 7-track EP "Shandai Ya / Stanka" presents the strongest songs from "BooCheeMish" in even more refined versions alongside two exclusive tracks - an impressive live rendition of Gerrard's solo composition 'Rite Of Passage' from a concert in Warsaw, Poland and 'Zaidi Sluntse', a collaboration between the choir and beatbox world champion SkilleR, marrying vocal skills that could not be more contrastive to great effect.
