Lotus Thief is a San Francisco band that merges post-black metal, space rock and ambient music, seamlessly blending the genres into a unique and greater musical whole. Originated by two members of celebrated "green metal" group Botanist - drummer Otrebor and multi-instrumentalist / composer Bezaelith - Lotus Thief is its own entity; a project with a stated purpose of "lauding knowledge and illuminating ancient words and art through song". Lotus Thief released its first album, "Rervm" in 2014 to strong fan and critical acclaim. The debut was hailed as "a splendid record" and "one that establishes Lotus Thief as a band to watch for the future".

Now, two years after the release of "Rervm", Lotus Thief presents its new album, "Gramarye", which significantly expands the themes defined on the band's debut.
Whereas "Rervm" set passages from Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius' "De Rerum Natura" to music and speaks to the science of learning, "Gramarye" explores yet another aspect of human knowledge: the realms of belief. The record's overarching theme is subsumed in its very title: the word "Gramarye" is a Middle English modification of a Middle French word meaning 'grammar book' or 'book of sorcery'.
"Gramarye" compiles five different antique source texts that span nearly two thousand years and five different civilizations, ranging from the ancient Egyptian funerary passage "The Book of the Dead", to Homer's "Odyssey" and the medieval "Merseburg Incantations" (one of the only pagan incantations still in existence in Old High German) through to the Aleister Crowley-penned early 20th century occult literature, "The Book Of Lies".

The lyrical depth that "Gramarye" possesses is mirrored in its music, which is more riffheavy, dynamic-laden and varied in both pace and mood than "Rervm", yet preserves and cements the trademark sound Lotus Thief has already achieved at this very early juncture of its career. During the writing sessions for the new record, the band promised "something entirely different and beautiful in its own new way" and with "Gramarye", Lotus Thief has delivered that guarantee tenfold.

San Francisco avant-gardists Lotus Thief create visionary music that incorporates elements of doom and black metal as well as post rock. Transcendent in sound and substance, the band has released two acclaimed albums ("Rervm" in 2014, and their Prophecy debut "Gramarye" in 2016), that draw insight from ancient texts for present-day life. History is preserved and ignited, a sonic re-imagining for a world where the human race learns from its past.

With their third record "Oresteia," Lotus Thief pushes their sound further than ever, focussing on both male and female singing, feral screams, melodic versus ferocious guitarwork and soaring violins. The result balances the atmospheric with the devastating.

In retelling the namesake epic trilogy from ancient Greece by tragedian Aeschylus, mastermind Bezaelith once again addresses distinctly modern topics, as the blood-drenched story of the mythical House of Atreus prompts several questions, ranging from the ethics of killing to gender roles.

"Oresteia" is an intentional narrative and boasts Lotus Thief's most sophisticated production so far. A five-headed hydra of distinct personalities and stylistic backgrounds contributes to the record's depth and diversity like the masked actors in an ancient stage play. It is no wonder that with its strong dynamics and ambient intersections, the tracks mirror an experience not unlike attending a performance in an amphitheater.

Add to this maybe the heaviest moments ever in Lotus Thief's oeuvre, their new full-length embodies the ingenuity and intensity of contemporary extreme music.

“Rervm” is a concept record based on Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, a 1st century BCE didactic poem that grazed the ideas of the universality of energy, atomism, rational thought over superstition, and free love – all in classic dactylic hexameter. “Nothing from nothing ever yet was born” is the line taken from Lucretius’ work that Lotus Thief channels the most, serving as the project’s raison d’être. De Rerum Natura‘s six books were each given their own tracks out of respect to the intended progression of the original texts. Indeed, “Rervm”’s intent is to carry the principal ideas of the text into song, and through sound, to take the listener on the 2,000-year old journey of a poet and philosopher poised within the universal human condition and the antithetic intelligence and ignorance of Ancient Rome.
