XASTHUR founder Scott Conner, an astute chronicler of the dark side of the American dream, has come to terms with the idea that his work can confuse people and be misread. He just accepts that reality now. This notion is clearly expressed in the title of his new work "Open to Misinterpretation". This insight has also firmed his resolve to neither change his artistic direction nor to attempt making his music easier for people to access. Conner is just not interested in chasing what has worked for other people or fitting neatly into a genre. This does not mean that XASTHUR are standing still. "Open to Misinterpretation" represents a deeper and more developed version of what Conner already does. He keeps honing his expression and to find new sounds and moods for his ideas. As a result, his songwriting has become equally more detailed as well as harder to predict at the same time. The production has audibly been cleared up, even though Conner still aims for the recording process to feel live, organic, and real. "Open to Misinterpretation" probably feels more complete because these songs have already been performed live on stage due to XASTHUR's prior touring activities on both sides of the Atlantic. With "Open to Misinterpretation", the American delivers a more focused and more confident album that realises the evolution and expression of Scott Conner's sound to a point that makes it harder to misunderstand this artist's intentions. Well, and if anyone does, he has come to accept it as an integral part of XASTHUR's music.
All else, they would leave to the creative process and somewhat to chance. BEES MADE HONEY recorded every other song on "In Between Strides" in various settings that were available to them at the time of creation: a cavernous cellar, a concert stage, an indoor balcony, a living room, their rehearsal space, even returning to the studio where their first album "Medicine" was tracked. Through this spontaneous and shifting approach, BEES MADE HONEY began to move texturally and stylistically from ambient and drone toward shoegaze along with more acoustic elements. According to their original plan, "In Between Strides" stepped into more melodic territory, with each song representing a different aspect of the band's musical vocabulary. BEES MADE HONEY IN THE VEIN TREE originate from the Swabian capital and German city of Stuttgart. All four members grew up together, eventually forming the band in 2014. Their musical template of ambient psychedelic doom was established with the debut album "Medicine" in 2017, and their sound has continued to evolve ever since. With "In Between Strides", BEES MADE HONEY have turned rage into reflection by developing a more organic and spontaneous approach to their songs, opening up wide spaces and letting the melodies flow freely. This musical honey tastes simply delicious.
Rarely has a debut album sounded as complete and sophisticated as "Hjarta" from MAUNAH. The Danish doom newcomers seemingly just appear out of the blue to deliver a modern doom metal masterpiece! Well, MAUNAH consists of veterans of the Danish rock, folk, and metal scenes such as Søren Sol Koldsen-Zederkof. The popular frontman has toured extensively with the beloved Nordic folk band KRAUKA, and he has also released several critically acclaimed albums under the artist’s name LOS. The band chemistry is just right, all the stars aligned – and remarkable talent, fresh musical ideas as well as mature songwriting flowed together naturally in MAUNAH. Although the roots of "Hjarta" reach deep into the melodic Scandinavian doom tradition, there is so much more happening on this album. A dash of Nordic folk here, a pinch of modern metal there, which is boosted by renowned producer Tue Madsen (THE HAUNTED, MOONSPELL, HEAVEN SHALL BURN et al.) being responsible for recording the groove parts with the Danes' rhythm section. With each new spin, "Hjarta" keeps giving as MAUNAH have crammed their album with excellent ideas and layers of details. In the Danes' own poetic words: "Maunah is the sound of despair and open skies. Maunah is leaves crunching underfoot, the cold of the forest floor seeping through the soles. And Maunah is the warmth of the sun on the face and oxygen filling the lungs.” With "Hjarta", MAUNAH offer a remarkable debut that goes well beyond the average and exceeds expectations. How far can these Danes get?
After six decades on all the stages of the world, boundary‑breaking performances, pioneering and innovating rock music, fate and life have brought the iconic singer back to where he came from – both as a creative artist and in his personal geography. For more than sixty years, ARTHUR BROWN has stood as one of the most singular figures in rock music. The singer and performer is universally recognised as a true visionary whose work has always moved beyond conventional songcraft and crossed over into theatre, ritual, and sonic experimentation. At the culmination of his extraordinary decade-spanning career, ARTHUR BROWN announces the release of what he describes as his pinnacle album: "Nature". In recent years, ARTHUR BROWN has been contemplating how he would like to see the final chapter of his musical journey to unfold. "Nature" is a reflection on a life that has been and is still dedicated to the search of meaning through creativity, spirituality, and artistic exploration. Throughout ARTHUR BROWN's life, one idea has returned time and again: the cosmic unity of existence. "Nature" places that philosophy at its centre. More than just another album, "Nature" offers an interwoven tapestry of natural sounds, improvised exploration of instruments, traditional composition, and joyful collaboration. With ARTHUR BROWN both in a physical and musical sense, it is time to let "Nature" take its course and blues rock to win hearts again!
What is frowned upon for good reasons in education these days, remains a great prospect for headbangers and metalheads of all ages. And SPACE CHASER deliver big time with their fourth studio album "Razorblade Bay". This album comes with everything that the discerning thrash metal gentleman might wish to hear these days: classic thrash riffing with a particular German leaning, and distant echoes of KREATOR, SODOM, and DESTRUCTION are always appreciated, yet there is also a dash of punk-ish energy and spirit as well as some speed metal bravado in their bespoke sonic garment. In short: in your face! At this point, it shall be duly noted that this galactic battleship is co-piloted in the producer's seat by none other than Andy Brings of SODOM-fame. SPACE CHASER add their own musical embroidery and their distinct lyrical stitching brings science fiction stories to life. Of course, not the boring technical stuff but rather the exciting horror aspects of the genre. Prepare to be devoured by giant space worms.
Swedes are supposed to be cool, and musically, BESVÄRJELSEN sure live up to that stereotype in the best possible way. What the self-proclaimed forest rockers deliver on their third full-length "Till Glömskan Ad Oblivionem" is so cool, in fact, that it's a hot early candidate for rock album of the year. The 'forest rock' moniker is the Swedes' tongue-in-cheek answer to the term 'desert rock', which stylistically provides a great starting point to describe their musical brand. Add exceptional vocalist Lea Amling Alazam, who developed her passion for punk and stoner rock at the local skate park when she was just 13 years old, to the band's plethora of riveting hooks and riffs, and you get an album that feels fresh and ready to deliver surprises for months if not years to come. If there is any justice, "Till Glömskan Ad Oblivionem" should make BESVÄRJELSEN as famous as the iconic wooden Dala horses that every tourist who visits the country takes home to put on their shelves. BESVÄRJELSEN were co-founded by guitarists and vocalists Andreas Bajer and Staffan Vinrot in 2014. Their musical vision was based on the idea to channel the spirit and traditions of the vast Dalarna forests, where Germanic gods and the spirit world of finno-ugric shamans met, into a contemporary urban context. With "Till Glömskan Ad Oblivionem", BESVÄRJELSEN have conjured 'Into Oblivion' twice, in both Swedish and Latin, but the spellbinding five-piece also deliver a cathartic rock album that will rank among the finest heavy releases of the genre and beyond in 2026.
The East Anglian trio has turned to their 'roots' in every sense, by distilling the true essence of what constitutes their sound through everything that they have learned and added in the last two decades. While the previous album, "Monuments to Absence" (2023), was deliberately arranged dense, fast and intense, FEN decided to leave breathing space on this album to allow more time for themes and ideas to exhale and unfurl. Of course, there is still much sonic aggression but channelled differently as large parts of "Mourning Earth" were recorded live to allow an organic nature to flow, and to permit the natural rhythms of the pieces to develop. Lyrically, FEN sum up their basic idea behind "Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth" in their own poetic words: "The morning mists clearing over the boggy expanses of the fens to reveal another grey, gloom-laden day of sorrow and regret. And at twilight, the slow, sad realisation that tomorrow promises only more of the same – tormented by the half-heard whispers of the spirits bound to the soils, our pain continues. And we can only endure." With "Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth", FEN have reached a new pinnacle in their exciting career and achieved a perfect balance between their black metal foundations and post-black metal innovations. FEN take their listener on a journey to grim bogs, languid waterways, and dismal fogs over bare rock – yet on the other side waits a sense of surcease to the endless existential ennui within.
The rebellious Belarus dissidents are powerfully demonstrating that they are far more than a 'one-trick pony' in every conceivable artistic aspect. Although "Vyraj" is still based on a solid foundation of black and post-black metal, DYMNA LOTVA move far beyond any easy labelling by also drawing inspiration from doom, heavy, and progressive metal, while venturing even deeper by incorporating elements from electronic music, goth, and folklore. The album is a cornucopia of great songs that are atmospherically dense and invite the listener onto an emotional roller-coaster ride from the darkest depths of depression and fear, via raw anger and defiance, to heights of ecstatic exhilaration. "Vyraj" is a musical kaleidoscope with ever changing patterns and sonic colours of remarkable beauty – that often dissolves into captivating melodies that at times even achieve a pop-like appeal. DYMNA LOTVA continue to carry the torch of rebellion, which is only natural as the founding members had to flee their native Belarus due to political persecution and continued attempts by the Lukashenka regime to censor and suppress their art. Yet on "Vyraj", they put their lyrical focus elsewhere. The album's main concept could be described as 'Belarusian ethno-astronomy.' In Slavonic legends, the starry sky is associated both with the afterlife and with journeys, which becomes closely intertwined with the musicians' personal experience of forced emigration. This idea is captured in the album title "Vyraj", which is a mythical realm to where birds migrate for the winter, and where the souls of the departed find their final rest. DYMNA LOTVA take another big step with "Vyraj" in their breathtakingly rapid artistic evolution. It is easy to predict that this unique and highly original band will soon appear on even bigger festival billings and European stages.
Musically, TEMPLE OF DREAD remain true to their old school death metal roots but continue to expand their sonic range by further honing their cinematic aspects with even more dark and heavy elements that began to receive special attention on the previous albums "Beyond Acheron" (2023) and "God of the Godless" (2024). These veterans are making full use of their vast experience and audible confidence in their deadly craft to add true emotions into their often rather technically focussed genre. Once again, these hardy islanders make use of classical themes from the ancient world with lyrics penned by their friend and long-time collaborator, the psychologist Frank "Doc" Albers. TEMPLE OF DREAD were founded on the island of Spiekeroog in 2017 by Markus Bünnemeyer with the intent to play old school death metal. Originally a trio, the band has now grown into a five-piece. With "Dreadspawn Dominion", TEMPLE OF DREAD do not just deliver about everything that their old school death metal following might desire but also invite listeners from other realms on the darker and harder side of metal to lend an ear. Listen and behold: an ancient darkness is rising to claim your souls!
The frost-biting beast in white is back and ready to rip heads off. When the "Snowbound Horror" descends from the icy wastes of blizzard-beaten peaks there is no escape. With their sophomore album, RAVAGED BY THE YETI deliver everything that their loyal following was hoping for after the acclaimed debut "Apex Predator" took the death metal world by storm. "Snowbound Horror" comes with massive riffs ripping from down-tuned strings, uncanny grooves, and captivating songs delivered with dripping gore and blood-red splatter (just look at the vinyl edition to know that this is true). The album has everything that old school death metal fans could ask for. Yet the Swedish-English-American trio did not idle since their first release. Sharpening their musical claws and filing their sonic teeth, RAVAGED BY THE YETI simply got bigger and better by offering more of everything that defines their sound. RAVAGED BY THE YETI return with a new line-up that can be best described as a gathering of friends from both sides of the Atlantic who just love to play old school death metal: With "Snowbound Horror", RAVAGED BY THE YETI live up to their name as this album is a vicious monster that will sink its brutal claws and fangs deep into the heads of death metal fans around the globe. And all the heaviness, experience, and obvious maturity of their songwriting across three decades is perfectly reflected in the seeming ease with which these master craftsmen hammer out one captivating and crushing track after the other. Revolving around apocalyptic, infernal, and end time themes that easily fit this day and age, "Fading Failing Ruin" nails the current global mood by taking a strong dose of inspiration from the earliest days of metal and blending it with contemporary heaviness. SOLACE have called their amalgamation of doom and heavy metal with hardcore elements dirt metal, while elsewhere it has been somewhat tongue-in-cheekily dubbed shorecore. Others file the New Jersey five-piece under stoner metal – and in truth, all these descriptions have and still fit the band to an extent. With "Fading Failing Ruin", SOLACE erect a new milestone of US heavy metal that respects traditions from both sides of the Atlantic while churning toward a chaotic future. Time to bang those heads!
Of course, MORTIIS' musical handwriting is ever present. Echoes from the often quite divergent phases of his previous works can be found across "Ghosts of Europa". Yet the creator of musical worlds left hardly a stone not turned in his epic quest for genuinely new ways of expression. As a result, this cinematic and visionary album often feels expansive, strange, and darkly dystopian. In this, "Ghosts of Europa" reflects its maker's struggles while creating the album – as for MORTIIS, these tend to come into existence at the cost of friendships and relationships as well as much soul searching in order to reflect both, the album's general orientation towards electronic and industrial rock as well as the particularly wide range of stylistic influences reaching beyond its core, the choice of sound engineer fell on a most renowned specialist for precisely such sonic experiences: Luckily, Sean Beavan agreed to mix "Ghosts of Europa". His credits include working with NINE INCH NAILS, DEPECHE MODE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, GUNS N' ROSES, and SLAYER among many other greats. Just when you think that you have finally figured "Ghosts of Europa" out, MORTIIS will surprise you with another facet and fresh aspect of his richly detailed masterpiece.
Built upon a solid foundation of death metal, "Quantifying Cosmic Doom" seamlessly adds walls of melancholy that are chiselled out of doom bedrock and crowns towering riffs with the fierce and spiritual flames of black metal. A wide range of musical variability as well as the masterful storytelling that runs like a golden thread through the epic songs give SOULBURN away as experienced veterans who are utterly confident and passionate about their extreme craft. SOULBURN rose from the ashes of ASPHYX in 1996, one of the times when the Dutch death metal pioneers fell apart before reuniting sooner or later. Their acclaimed debut album "Feeding on Angels" (1998) doubled up as a statement of musical intent as it contained a stripped down but deadly concoction of doom-laden black metal, which quickly established them as a devastating musical force. Behind the fifth SOULBURN album, "Quantifying Cosmic Doom", lies a long journey that never followed a straightforward road but travelled through many dimensions and took hidden paths. Yet the Dutch metal extremists have undeniably reached a dark and beautiful peak.
The burning pulse of the sun's nuclear fire scorching the desert. The smooth sliding of glistening skin over other skin in a throbbing rhythm. The swelling hum of motion in a mass of bodies. KLIMT 1918 capture many such fleeting moments in time and preserve them through cascading walls of sound and the elegant drone of guitars. The Italian's fifth album, "Àmor", represents a climax of their acclaimed previous work into a most melancholic, sensual, and majestic collection of captivating music. "Àmor" was born out of silence, solitude and social distancing. Yet as a deliberate artistic counterpoint, KLIMT 1918 decided to have all their new songs revolve around carnality, ardour, physical contact between bodies, and the urgent, compelling feelings that keep people awake at night. As a crowning glory, KLIMT 1918 were artistically knighted when the legendary Tony Doogan accepted to mix 'Àmor' and Frank Arkwright (Abbey Road Studios) added his mastering genius. Both renowned engineers have previously joined forces to collaborate with such acts as MOGWAI and SNOW PATROL, and their portfolios also include such greats as JOY DIVISION, COLDPLAY, and OASIS among many others. Although it took plenty of time, diligence, and energy, "Àmor" proves with every second that the album is more than worth this long wait. KLIMT 1918 take their raw emotionality expressed in dynamic, glowing soundscapes rather than fixed structures and calculated hooks to another peak!
What sets the duo of vocalist Mick Moss, who is best known for his work with ANTIMATTER, and Portuguese guitarist Luís Fazendeiro apart, is their artistic achievement to make such existential pain audible with every note on their sophomore album "Dreams & Limitations". Using a form of doomy progressive or even post-rock as their sonic foundation, SLEEPING PULSE compose music that is in the best way deeply emotional while remaining exciting. The duo's songs do not wallow in sorrow; they rather embrace the inevitable and live through it for as long as it lasts. It took SLEEPING PULSE more than a decade to create a more than worthy heir to "Under the Same Sky" (2014). With "Dreams & Limitations" SLEEPING PULSE continue where they left off while they gently venture further on their rocky path. It invites all those to follow, for whom rock music is not all about party and kicking ass. "Dreams & Limitations" gives a musical voice to loss and pain, but it also offers to carry a part of the burden, comfort and hope, and to be an understanding companion through such dark times.
Mastermind Kristian Eivind Espedal aka Gaahl and his diligently selected collaborators have gone even beyond the complex yet sinister sound that they established with "...by the shadows...". The exponentially grown confidence and hard-gained experience of joining together seemingly quite different musicians is reflected clearly in each track of "...by the word...". TRELLDOM have concluded the process of escaping the narrowest definition of black metal without compromising their artistic mission. Their music does not only stay loyal to the spirit of their black metal roots, but the Norwegians are making a solid point that their new sound is even more dark and fierce than ever before – just in more twisted and unhinged ways. "...by the word..." is the result of Espedal expanding the immense range of his vocals even further into unexplored territories. And it should be noted that this was partly achieved by his return to the famous Grieghallen Studios in Bergen to work again with legendary producer Eirik Hundvin aka Pytten, who was instrumental in the creation of the 'Norwegian black metal' sound. TRELLDOM continue in the tradition of all of Espedal's art, which asks to always expect the unexpected. With "...by the word..." the exploration of avant-garde dissonance, wicked rhythm patterns, and wild ideas again destroys preconceptions and demands intense listening. Better prepare to be challenged by every note!
This album pulls no punches and hits straight into the gut and face. The German trio has amplified 15 years of experience into a record that comes with their trademark sound but is confident and mature both in songwriting and storytelling. On "Death Doom Punks", ARROGANZ are never afraid to let their influences shine through as they obviously made them their own. Driven by a heavy pumping bass and relentlessly whipped drum skins, the trio stacks massive riffs on top of each other and finishes any remaining resistance off with a barrage of deep-throated growls. Whatever ARROGANZ are doing, it always comes out at 100% while never forgetting the original roots in old school death metal. The trio's unwillingness to compromise has been hailed by many and earned them the hate of others - about which they do not give the slightest… as authenticity and honesty in every aspect are their key traits. With ARROGANZ what you see and hear is what you get, and "Death Doom Punks" is not just the album title but also a declaration of allegiance and intent. Get on board, bang your head, slam and rage - or get out!
